Stop the Sardine-Can Plan

Say "NO" to 60 apartments in the old medical center

The Backstory 🏠

The old medical center at 630 6th Street here in Nevada was sold by Story County to a buyer from Georgia in 2023.

The owner wants to turn it into 60 apartment units, mostly one-bedrooms. This number has been non-negotiable thus far.

Many of us homeowners believe this ill-fitting plan will have drastic adverse impacts on noise, traffic, and crime levels.

Note: We are NOT against new housing in general; especially if it's planned better, is not this degree of high-density, and involves local developers.

Update: 2025-05-12

Despite all the protests—of not just the neighborhood but from people all over town—the spot-rezoning has sadly still passed a supermajority council vote on the 3rd and final hearing. 🙁

📺 Stay tuned for ways to oppose the upcoming development site plan.

We just needed one more "nay" vote

(Map showing a 200ft-radius around the medical center and parking lots, and all the corresponding protest letters in red)

Iowa code 414.5 says that if the owners of 20% or more of surrounding properties file letters of protest, then the city council vote must be 3/4ths supermajority to pass the rezoning.

(And we greatly surpassed this 20% threshold with flying colors; with 55% submitting protests)
